Nose surgery, also called Rhinoplasty, is a surgical procedure performed to reshape the inner and/or outer structures of the nose. Reconstructive Surgery is used to correct disfigurement from injury, relieve nasal obstructions, or alleviate breathing difficulties. Cosmetic Nose Surgery is performed to make the outer appearance of the nose more attractive, and may be done in conjunction with internal Reconstructive Surgery. Nose surgery procedures may involve removing a nasal hump, elevating the tip of the nose, narrowing or shortening the nose, or reducing the size of the nostrils. Modern techniques focus on creating a very natural looking nose by paying close attention. Computer imaging will help immensely in defining a new and attractive nose.
Nose surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis under IV sedation or general anesthesia. Most work is done through the inside of the nose so that there are no visible scars. Following surgery, the nose is bandaged and the eyes may be black and blue for one week.
While cosmetic surgery is generally not covered by insurance, internal Reconstructive Nose Surgery is commonly covered by medical insurance.
While Nasal Humps are often the reason for nose surgery, a full or rounded nasal tip can be by itself an indication for a rhinoplasty procedure.
Sometimes, people will have more cartilage on the tip of their nose than they prefer. This can be improved through a surgical procedure called tip-plasty. This surgery sculpts the cartilage in the nasal tip and can also narrow the nostrils if necessary. Improvements will be seen within 2 weeks but will improve for the next 3-6 months before attaining final results.
The Clinique of Plastic Surgery's computer imager allows the patient and the doctor to jointly redesign the features of the nose according to the desired appearance sought. This allows the plastic surgeon to demonstrate what is surgically possible to the patient prior to surgery.
